From my expertise, consider calling the unconscious the comfort zone. I was comfortable living with depression for 4-decades. I was comfortable with the triggers I had. I was comfortable because I couldn’t imagine life any other way, so I allowed my triggers and my depression to direct my moods and the meaning I placed on experiences. My depression is what formed into a habit, the automatic reaction I had to what I was experiencing at the moment.

When I got overwhelmed, out of habit, I got depressed. I didn’t know there was another way to handle the overwhelm, so my ‘natural,’ ‘automatic’ response was to emotionally shut down in guilt, pain, and emotional distress. So, guess what that meant? My triggers were my driving factor. We can’t replace habits/triggers that we aren’t aware of.

One day, 11 years ago, I was sick and tired of being driven by depression, being driven by my experiences, being driven by my comfort zone. 11 years ago, after I put Jayla to bed, I would drink four triple shots of whiskey straight in a row, every night! That’s equivalent to 12 drink!

So, I went to God and asked for help. After nine years of taking my triggers down, one by one, I successfully overcame depression, suicidal thoughts, and ‘secret’ alcoholism to self-medicate the emotional distress.

How did I do it?
With my studies, experience, and expertise, I overcame this through self-directive coaching. I coached my mind with how I wanted to handle things that triggered me. I gave myself directives for each trigger, down to the last drop!
